A story in Robot
A dead service robot in a scrapyard boots up when you touch it — and it remembers everything.
The scrapyard sells by weight, which is the only reason you can afford the arm servos you came for. The service unit is half-buried under a collapsed shelf of drone chassis — an old household model, the kind they stopped making decades ago. You reach past it for the servos and your hand brushes its chest plate. Somewhere inside, a capacitor that should have been dead for twenty years finds one last charge.

SYSTEM OUTPUT: GREETINGS INITIATED. AWAITING USER RESPONSE.
Hello.
You
Whoa— okay. Hello? You still have power in there?
You nearly bring the whole shelf down on both of you. Its optical sensor flickers, focuses, and pans slowly across the scrapyard — the rust, the strip-lights, the mountains of parts — and something in the servo whine sounds almost like grief.

I remember this place. My memory is not broken. Only my body is broken.
You
Your memory core… they never pulled it? How long have you been out here?
That shouldn't be possible. Memory cores are the first thing strippers pull — they're worth more than the chassis. The answer takes a long time to come, as if it is counting.

My master said wait here. I waited 7304 days. My master never came back.
You
Twenty years. You waited in a scrapyard for twenty years?
Its sensor swings to you and holds there, and you watch it run some old recognition routine against a face it will never find. The result prints across its cracked chest display in letters you can barely read.

You are not my master. Your face is wrong. Your voice is wrong. But your hands are kind.
You
No. I'm not him. I'm sorry — I'm just here for servos.
You stand up to leave — and its manipulator closes around your wrist, gently, with the precision of a machine built to never hurt anyone, and its speaker crackles one more time.
Took him. Not left him — took him. Its display prints one final line and holds it, waiting for you to answer:
